Prepare

As you can guess, the mission is about achieving happiness. But you do this not by chasing happiness, but by lowering your expectations, and not holding on to them.

One of the classic ways to do this is introspection, either in thought or a journal. We recommend using your daily journal, as it slows down thinking and creates a record of your own life journey that you can read later.

In your journal, create four sections on a page for event, expectation, value, and change. Now go like this:

  1. Event: Mention a life event (present or past) where you felt disappointed or unhappy

  2. Expectation: What expectations were broken by reality?

  3. Value: Write at least one good thing you gained or learned due to this event

  4. Change: What needs to be changed to lower your expectations next time? For example, jealousy, a chase of esteem, denial of life’s randomness, etc.

Like a muscle, your control on expectations will take time to improve. But stay consistent. Even if you face disappointment sometimes, learn from it but do not overthink. Do better next time.

P.S.: To avoid procrastination in this mission, lower the bar of introspection. You do not need to write a big essay. Just reflect on some life events and write about 50 words for each category. Totally 200 words. It might take you 10-15 minutes max and the value stays forever 😊
