Visualization is often looked upon with skepticism, probably because when famous people like Conor McGregor, Jim Carrey, or Oprah talk about the times when they were poor but still visualized success and eventually made it, it seems like a scam. Fair enough. If it were so easy then everybody would just visualize and be successful.

"Fake it till you make it" is a famous aphorism. It suggests that by imitating certain attributes, like confidence, competence, and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their life and achieve the results they seek. This phrase is usually criticized, since some people use it as a free pass to lie to themselves and others, escaping their reality. Consider a person who is under a huge debt but still lives lavishly because they believe in “Fake it till you make it.” Do not be this person, please.

Here is the truth: Yes, there is no substitute for hard work, but if your brain does not feel comfortable with your success, it will sabotage you in ways you cannot even understand. For context, procrastination is just one of its weapons. In the first mission in the Waters of Love, we discussed an example of association: women who have been in abusive relationships are likely to end up in more bad relationships. Similarly, association with mediocrity becomes a hurdle when you are trying to be successful.

Faking It Smartly

When you visualize your success or fake it before you make it, you prime your brain to start associating with a new way of life. It will slowly get comfortable with this reality, and even start looking for ways to get to it. When this subconscious force is coupled with your hard work, achieving your dreams becomes easier than before. New opportunities show up in places where you did not even look earlier. This is all because now your brain associates a new way of life with comfort. This is exactly the kind of visualization that most of these successful people give credit to.

To fake something does not even have to be about spending money. If you can visualize a situation vividly, maybe with the help of videos and photographs, you can still make your brain start believing that it is possible to exist in this new reality.

Still here? Ok, here we go.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

Impostor syndrome refers to an internal experience of believing that you do not deserve your success or are not as competent as others perceive you to be. This can affect your peace and performance adversely. And sadly, its cases have been on the rise lately. If you want to avoid it or are already suffering from it, we have a request. Can you be our Guinea Pig? 😉

Hahaha, we are kidding. We have a self-tested remedy below but there is no big research supporting it, so take it with a pinch of salt.

We think that “fake it till you make it” visualization can help you dodge Impostor syndrome, and if you are already facing it, then travel back in time and visualize all the hard work that you put in to reach where you are. Be grateful for having the opportunity to impact all the lives and doing the work that you are committed to.

Often, we undervalue our own efforts and even forget them in the long run. Visualizing these moments can help us associate our success with all the hard work we put in. To make it more effective, use a journal because it helps you slow down your thoughts and note down even small details that you are likely to miss otherwise.

If you were facing impostor syndrome earlier, let us how this method helped you. We are all in this together! 😊
